{"id":98788,"date":"2023-04-06T04:07:51","date_gmt":"2023-04-05T18:07:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/?p=98788"},"modified":"2023-04-05T20:12:12","modified_gmt":"2023-04-05T10:12:12","slug":"bringing-colour-to-mental-health","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/news\/bringing-colour-to-mental-health\/","title":{"rendered":"Bringing colour to mental health"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>NON-for-profit organisation OneWave shone a colourful light on mental health at local schools through a series of workshops that focused on freeing the funk and sharing that &#8220;It&#8217;s okay to not be okay&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>In partnership with the World Surf League (WSL) and Hydralyte, the initiative made its way to Surf Coast Secondary College, with more than 125 students taking part in three fun and inclusive workshops<\/p>\n<p>The sessions educated students on how surfing and being active can help develop strong mental health and wellbeing.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_98795\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-98795\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-98795 size-thumbnail\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2023\/04\/IMG_2897_23823-1-600x380.jpg?_t=1680689413\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"380\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-98795\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">More than 125 students took part in the three sessions.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>OneWave founder Grant Trebilco said it was fantastic that the program was supported by the WSL and Hydralyte to educate more people during the Rip Curl Pro period.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It was great to share free and fun tips with the students to teach them about how to free the funk.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We know early prevention, connection and conversations save lives, so we bring colour to mental health and share tips and tools that young people can use throughout their lives.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_98791\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-98791\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-98791\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2023\/04\/IMG_2905_23847.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-98791\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Mrs Phyland took the group through a dancing workshop that could help them free the funk.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This session was one of six sessions on the coast\u2026 ultimately it will impact over 2,000 students in the region.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The support from the World Surf League and Hydralyte has been unreal, they&#8217;ve got a massive focus on mental health which is just awesome.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>World Surf League Australia-Oceania president Andrew Stark said the work with OneWave and local schools would encourage mental health openness and positive discussions.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_98792\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-98792\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-98792\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2023\/04\/IMG_2896_23872-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-98792\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Trebilco and the OneWave team have just celebrated their 10-year anniversary of bringing colour to mental health.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Mental health is a real issue in society and making it easier for people to talk about problems they may have is a great way to address mental health issues.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We look forward to seeing this partnership flourish into the future.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>OneWave is also set to host a Fluro Friday event this Friday, April 7 to continue their chain of mental health positivity.<\/p>\n<p>For more information, head to <a href=\"http:\/\/onewaveisallittakes.com\">onewaveisallittakes.com<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>NON-for-profit organisation OneWave shone a colourful light on mental health at local schools through a series of workshops that focused on freeing the funk and sharing that &#8220;It&#8217;s okay to not be okay&#8221;.
