Create new art from old books
ARTIST Kerrie Maloney will be sharing how to create a collaged concertina book using the book pages from a recycled old hardback next week.
They will be reworked into a collage which will be cut to create the book.
“I have friends who think to cut a book up or tear a book up is like sacrilege,” Maloney said.
“But there are so many books in the world, and they all end up in tips.
“Let’s give them a second life as an art form.”
Each participant requires one hardback book which is novel size, a selection of books with different print types, size and shades, and some interesting pages such as maps, drawings or handwritten pages.
“It’s an entree if you like into the world of creating that is relatively inexpensive, it’s easy, and it’s a good basic technique as a stepping stone to something else,” Maloney said.
“We’re going to take a vintage or an old book cover and we’re going to create the contents ourselves using old book pages in a collage format.”
Maloney has created art across a range of disciplines, initially working with textiles before developing an interest in mixed media.
“I’ve always been a maker and a repurposer,” she said.
The session will take place on Tuesday 19 August from 10 am until 3 pm at Lerderderg Library.
