AN enduring family-friendly bush camp that celebrates music, dance, art and conversation will take over the YMCA’s Lady Northcote Discovery Camp in Glenmore over four days between Friday 11 April and Monday 14 April.
First held in 1983 in the Otways, the volunteer-run Turramurra Folk Music Bush Camp welcomes people of all ages and abilities and is looking to invite Moorabool locals to come and join in the fun.
Co-organiser Bec Rigby, who has been attending the event with several generations of her family for as long as she can remember, says the focus of the weekend is based on the concept that anyone can play music.
Over 20 workshops will take place and will be supported by a wide variety of experienced tutors covering many endeavors – from Tarantella dancing to puppetry and old-time American folk tunes.
There’ll also be a welcome performance on the Friday night, a bush dance on the Saturday night and a community concert on the Sunday evening.
“Whether (they’re) young or old, everyone gets the opportunity to perform something that they’ve learnt over the weekend (at the concert) or something that they want to share,” Ms Rigby said.
“That’s where some of the most beautiful moments happen, where you might see a five-year-old kid get up and perform a song that they’ve written, or they’ve made a little dance up with some other kids they’ve met.
“It’s all about getting everyone into making music as something that you can do for fun – you don’t have to be great at it.
“If you’re looking for a friendly, supportive environment to encourage your kids to get into music or maybe try music out yourself, this is a great opportunity.”
The Turramurra Folk Music Bush Camp 2025 takes place from 4pm on Friday 11 April to 10.30am on Monday 14 April at the YMCA’s Lady Northcote Discovery Camp in Glenmore Road, Glenmore.
Tickets can be purchased via Humanitix, with a new concession price and free entry for children under 12.
