Treble makers, assemble
A MOORABOOL town is getting a new community choir, and people of all ages and experience levels are welcome to join.
The Ballan Community Choir will hold its first taster pop-up sessions in April and May, letting people get an idea of what’s in store.
Edwina Vega is one of the locals eager to get the group off the ground, and said the songs the choir sing will be shaped by what members like singing.
“We’re starting really simple to begin with, and we’ll see how it goes from there. The idea’s been kicking around for some time.
“There was a storm choir set up in Blackwood last year, to bring people together after the 2021 storms. So it’s been discussed on and off around town for some time, about how nice it’d be to have something like that in Ballan.
“It’s a nice creative thing to do, and it also brings people out of their houses, having a sing, and creating that lovely social interaction and connection.”
If the group does get a good turnout of enthusiastic members, the hope is that they can perform at the Hide + Seek Festival in November, and other events beyond then.
“We’d also like to commission some pieces to sing from local composers about Ballan, based on the kinds of singers we have in the group,” Ms Vega said.
“We’re putting a funding submission in to Moorabool Shire Council about that, so we’re hoping to get some great support from the community and Council.
“To those that might want to take part, but aren’t sure, I’d say that they’re in very good hands with our music director, Myrawin Nelson. Everyone is welcome to come and have a try!”
Taster sessions will start on April 16, with rehearsals on April 23, April 30 and May 7, from 7pm to 8.30pm at the Ballan Mechanics Hall. Phone 5368 1934.
