CLARENDON Recreation Reserve is turning 150 years old in 2024.

A ‘Back to Clarendon’ event will be held next month at the community facility to celebrate.

On Saturday 19 October from 11am, Clarendon residents past and present, those who have been involved with the reserve, family and friends are invited to reminisce.

“The recreation reserve has been part of the Clarendon community since 1874, being used for horse races, cricket, sport meetings, tennis and many more events over the last 150 years,” said Back to Clarendon secretary Sandra David.

“Clarendon lost their primary school in 1974, the Clarendon hall in 2004, followed closely by the closure of the local church.

“As a result of the Scotsburn fires, the community centre was built and opened in 2019, and has become very popular in bringing the community together again after many years.

Back to Clarendon Secretary Sandra David said the Recreation Reserve has been used for diverse sports, from horse racing to cricket.

“In the last two years, the tennis courts have been brought back to life, with a new playground about to be installed.

“The Back to Clarendon celebrations will give the community a chance to reconnect and celebrate all their achievements.”

A barbecue lunch will be held at noon and an afternoon tea will follow with tea, coffee and soft drink provided, otherwise attendees can bring their own drinks.

There will be a photo display, and families who have called Clarendon home throughout the 150 years are invited to pre-purchase a tree and plaque to be planted on the day.

The community centre will be open all evening for those that would like to continue catching up. The refreshments have been funded by Community Bank Buninyong.

RSVP by 5 October for catering purposes to Trevor Smith on 0428 125 202, [email protected], or via the Facebook event.
