A fair go for ratepayers?

New legislation has come before the State Parliament which the Andrews Government has promoted as “giving ratepayers a fair go” – but some in local government have raised suspicions at the timing of the bill.
The ‘Local Government Amendment (Rating Reform and Other Matters) Bill 2022’ will limit how councils can pursue ratepayer debts, including a ban on the use of debt collectors or legal action, “unless ratepayers refuse to engage, and all other options have been exhausted”.
It will also allow the Minister for Local Government, in consultation with the Essential Services Commission (ESC), to set a maximum amount of interest levied on unpaid rates and charges.
