Adopt a pet in Bacchus Marsh this March
PETSTOCK Bacchus Marsh is taking part in Petstock Foundation’s National Pet Adoption Month initiative this March, aiming to permanently rehome as many rescue pets as possible.
Staff at the pet store are encouraging locals to adopt an animal, from dogs and cats to reptiles and horses.
Data from the foundation states one in five Australian households welcomed a pet in the past few years, but not all considered the option of adoption.
Over 10,000 animals need a forever home in Australia, and although some have unique medical and behavioural challenges, or may be bonded to other pets, animal behaviourist Lara Shannon said education is key.
“Many rescue pets, including dogs, cats and smaller animals, are already house-trained and have basic manners,” she said.

“Most of the time, adopting a pet isn’t starting from scratch, it’s about building on the great traits they already have.
“Larger dogs don’t necessarily need more exercise than small dogs; it depends on their breed, age and personality, and bonded pairs are perfect for those worried about leaving pets alone during the day, as they keep each other company.”
Petstock Foundation head Jessica Curtis said adoption not only changes the life of an animal but also makes families and lives even better.
“Imagine a future where every family can include pets, no matter their housing situation,” she said.
“This is essential for the millions of Australians who want pets to be part of their lives.
“With housing situations in mind, National Pet Adoption Month is a chance for Australians to consider not only traditional pets like dogs and cats, but also smaller companions like guinea pigs, birds and reptiles that may be easier for renters to adopt. Together, we can help create a better future for all pets and people.”
