A NEW food relief service will ensure healthy food reaches needy people in the Ballan district.

Combining two programs, the collaboration between the Ballan Neighbourhood House, FoodBank Victoria and the Ballan and District Country Women’s Association (CWA), will be launched on Thursday 8 May.

Titled Share the Bounty, the food relief program will provide much-needed groceries to those in short or long-term need.

It will be complemented by a weekly Friends and Food Cafe, offering people in need a chance to receive support, lend a hand, or simply enjoy a warm cuppa and a friendly chat.

Megan Sadlier, from the Ballan Neighbourhood House, said the new initiatives would bring both practical support and heartfelt connection to the local community.

“With the rising cost of living and increasing economic pressures, many individuals and families in Ballan and surrounding areas are feeling the pinch,” Ms Sadlier said.

“In response, Ballan Neighbourhood House, in partnership with FoodBank Victoria and the Ballan and District Country Women’s Association (CWA), is proud to launch this much-needed local initiative.

“Share the Bounty will provide a weekly food relief service, distributing essential groceries to those in need.

“Whether someone is facing a temporary setback, or needs ongoing support, the program aims to offer reliable, respectful assistance in a welcoming environment.”

“Alongside it, the Food and Friends Cafe creates an open space for everyone in the community to gather, relax, and connect.”

The cafe will open every Thursday from 10am to 1pm.

“Thanks to the generosity of the Ballan and District CWA, guests can enjoy lovingly baked cakes, tea, and coffee, all served in a friendly and inclusive setting,” Ms Sadlier said.

“It’s more than just a cafe, it’s a community hub built on kindness and companionship.”

Volunteers are being sought to help with the programs, including people with food sorting, packing and distribution skills, or feel comfortable working in a kitchen or cafe setting, with basic food handling or serving experience.

Ballan Neighbourhood House is also seeking people who are:

Friendly and approachable, to welcome visitors and assist cafe guests.

Good communicators, who enjoy a chat and can help create a warm, inclusive atmosphere.

Physically able, to assist with lifting and setting up tables, chairs, and supplies.

Creative or resourceful, bringing ideas for how to improve the space, services, or connections between people.

“Whether you have specific experience in community service, food relief, hospitality, or simply want to make a difference in your town, there’s a role for you,” Ms Sadlier said.

“No formal qualifications are needed, just a willingness to contribute, listen, and support others.

“The Share the Bounty program and Food and Friends Cafe are more than just service, they’re an invitation to build a stronger, more connected community.”
