Did you know more people drown in inland waterways, such as lakes and rivers, more than anywhere else?

With beautiful warm weather ahead, the summer safety legends from Life Saving Victoria and Victoria Police pictured at one of Victoria’s beautiful urban lakes, have some water safety tips to share with you.

Before you jump in the water, always check for:
– Hidden dangers like strong currents (which can commonly occur after lots of rain)
– Colder than expected water
– Water quality (Check the EPA website: https://fal.cn/3m49F)
– Submerged debris

If you’re boating, kayaking or canoeing:
– Always wear a lifejacket
– Avoid alcohol

If swimming in lakes or rivers:
– Never swim alone

Remember, safety in nature is everyone’s responsibility:
– Do a first aid course – this way you’ll feel prepared for the unexpected.
