THE Australian Plants Society Heathcote Inc held another successful flower show and plant sale last weekend and hope to grow the event to an even bigger one next year.

“Despite early wet weather, I think the attendance is even better than last year,” said Secretary Tania Biagioni.

Beautiful Banksias: Members of the Australian Plants Society Heathcote Inc arranged displays of favourite native flowers from their own gardens.

“Lots of people are coming in from the Lions Club market and there’s a fantastic community vibe.

What to plant: Grower Pete Broughton explained to Lynda Pearson which plants were the best to grow in the Heathcote area.

“We had a great show last year and this year Heathcote Artists Inc and McKwey Park Art who make items from recycled horseshoes, have joined us.

Expert advice: Visitors to the show were able to get advice on popular native plants directly from the growers in attendance.

“They have both reported good sales and we’re hoping to include more community groups next year.”

President of Heathcote Artists Inc Iris McLean said the group was very happy with the day.

Local growers reported good sales and interest in their plants.

“We’ve made lots of sales and we’re donating ten per cent of the sales to the plant society,” she said.

“All our group have been busy over the past few months preparing arts works featuring local plants and scenes.

“Some members are quite new at it, but they’ve done a wonderful job.

“We are looking forward to participating again next year.”

All money raised will go towards the plant society’s Heathcote Native Garden Project.

“Our raffle with prizes donated by generous businesses in the community was well supported,” said Ms Biagioni.

Alison and Lindsay Pell sought advice from grower Pete Broughton about the best native plants to grow.

“We are very grateful to them and everyone who attended and gave us terrific feedback.

“Already we’re looking forward and planning for next year.

“A lot of people came a long distance to see the show and it would be wonderful if we could make it into an even bigger community festival.

Seven local stallholders attended the show and reported good sales of their native plant varieties.

“There are so many wonderful things Heathcote has to offer.”
