Combatting road trauma

Speeding was the highest road offence committed in Moorabool, following a state-wide Victoria Police operation to reduce road trauma.

Operation Argus, which ran from 12.01am Thursday 5 September to 11.59pm Sunday 8 September, was set up in response to the significant number of people killed on Victorian roads this year.

In Moorabool, 40 speeding offences were recorded, followed by ten unregistered vehicles, five unlicensed drivers, two drink drivers, two disqualified drivers, one seatbelt offence and one mobile phone offence.

The operation targeted the main causes of road trauma, including driver impairment, fatigue, speeding, distraction and seatbelt offences.

In an interview last month with the Moorabool News, Moorabool Inspector Damien Christensen said a component of combatting road trauma was education.

“How do we ensure that drivers are safe, [so] they’re not distracted, they’re not impaired, they’re not fatigued,” he said.

“That’s enforcement and education, and then safer speeds, so we have a lot to do with trying to influence speed limits.”

At the time of publication, the Moorabool LGA has seen five fatalities on its roads in 2019.
