Crafting for community

Two craft groups in the community have each been given grants to continue their work in helping those most vulnerable.
Moorabool Makers and Bacchus Marsh Friendship Quilters received a combined $1,850 from Moorabool Shire Council earlier this month as part of the Round 2 Community Grants.
Moorabool Makers – which received $900 – will go toward supplies such as knitting needles and containers.
The group began in July last year and meets twice a week at the Lerderderg Library, creating items such as quilts, clothing and toys for knitting charity KOGO, who distributes the items to vulnerable people in the community.
Moorabool Makers member Elizabeth Wadeson said the group has created “around 120 items, but we’ve lost count!”
Ms Wadeson said the group allows her to be “able to help the most vulnerable people in the community.”
“You know you’re doing something [for others], and you never know where it’s going to end up. You don’t know who is in the community,” she said.
Another grant recipient working with KOGO is Bacchus Marsh Friendship Quilters, a 35-year strong group that creates items, including an annual ‘charity quilt’ to use as a fundraiser for various charities.
The group received $950, which will go toward purchasing materials.
Both groups are open to new members.
Moorabool Makers meet Mondays 6-8pm and Wednesday 1-3pm at the Lerderderg Library.
