A good reminder about making sure the flue or chimney is cleaned if you burn wood for heating.

Depending how much wood is burnt cleaning may need to happen a couple of times over winter.

The cold weather is here and wood fires are being lit across the region.

But stop for a minute and ask yourself – have you checked, or better still, cleaned your chimney or flue lately?

Every winter we start getting calls to chimney fires, as do CFA brigades across the state. But we are hoping this is the year we don’t get any.

With upcoming wintry conditions a sign of what’s coming, you should be ensuring your chimney and/or flue are not clogged before lighting your fireplaces.

Keep your home and your family safe this winter by checking your chimney:
• Use a torch to check for creosote build-up or obstructions like bird nests.
• Have your chimney professionally cleaned annually.
