Drive thieves away

Theft of vehicles and personal property is a growing concern for Victoria Police, but there are a range of ways you can lower the risk of becoming a victim.

Always lock all windows and doors when leaving your vehicle, and ensure valuable possessions aren’t left visible to tempt thieves. If you need to keep valuables in the car, put them in the boot so they can’t be seen from the outside.

If you have a GPS, remove it from its display with the mounting unit, along with mounting suction caps, and store them somewhere they can’t be seen.
Fitting number plates with anti-theft screws will lower the risk of your number plate being stolen, and park in a well-lit and secured area – a garage or carport where possible – is also a good way of deterring criminals.

Never leave garage door remote controls in vehicles parked outside home address, and if possible, mark property with the letter ‘V’ for Victoria and your driver’s licence number – this helps police to return located property.

And above all, keep your car keys secure at all times.
