Endangered species back in numbers
The Potoroo is one of our state’s most endangered animals.
They’re targeted by predators like foxes and feral cats.
And to make matters worse, the Black Summer bushfires wiped out almost 70% of their habitat.
After the fires the Victorian Government’s Biodiversity Response and Recovery Program was set up to save plants and animals like the Potoroo in burnt out areas.
As part of the program a huge pest control project got underway to give them a fighting chance, and motion sensor cameras were set up to monitor for signs of life.
And now we’ve spotted some good news.
Potoroo have been caught on camera at 53 sites, including areas outside their known range.
The fires impacted thousands of species – but thanks to projects like this one, animals like the Potoroo are bouncing back.
