SUMMER has arrived in Moorabool Shire and there is plenty of fun to be had while escaping the heat.
Here are some recommendations for places to visit and things to see this January.
Go for a stroll
Moorabool Shire is home to several walks through state parks and forests as well as more leisurely strolls.
For those looking for a relaxing adventure, walk along some or all of the 10-kilometre Bacchus Marsh Avenue of Honour or check out the Moorabool Falls to Lal Lal Falls five-kilometre loop.
Those looking for a challenge can take on the Werribee Gorge State Park circuit walk or go between O’Brien’s Crossing and Mackenzie’s Flat.
Uncover history
Across Moorabool Shire are several historic cemeteries built following European colonisation in the area.
The cemeteries range in age, size, the number of surviving headstones and amenities.
Blackwood Cemetery is known for its Chinese section while Hopetoun Cemetery is known as the first Catholic cemetery in regional Victoria.

Taste local produce
The area surrounding Bacchus Marsh is known for its fresh fruits and vegetables.
Strawberries, apples, peaches, nectarines and apricots are all in season in January, making the perfect summer snack.
Along the Bacchus Marsh Avenue of Honour, visitors will find roadside stalls of produce as well as opportunities for picking.
Visit a national park
Brisbane Ranges National Park has range of bushwalking, camping, and picnicking options available.
Located in an area surrounding and north of Steiglitz, there are walking tracks which take between 90 minutes and three days to complete.
Uncover more than 600 native plant species including the rare Brisbane Ranges Grevillea and Velvet Daisy Bush as well as Australian wildlife such as kangaroos, wallabies, echidnas, possums and gliders.
Get lost in a medieval castle
Take a visit to Kryal Castle and uncover a medieval adventure with knights, dragons and entertainment.
Watch jousting displays, take a shot at archery or learn how to cast a spell.
The castle is open every day of the Victorian school holidays and regularly holds special themed events.
