Fabulous fiddlers return

Twenty musicians will take to the stage at Blackwood Town Hall this weekend, with a range of string instruments, and of course voices, to fill the hall with song.

While most of the Melbourne Scottish Fiddlers performing this Sunday will be, as the name suggests, fiddlers, the concert will also feature cello, harp, and guitar.

Expect a heart-warming mix of the traditional and the contemporary – of songs and tunes that will bring a smile to the lips and perhaps a tear to the eye. For anyone who can trace a link back to Scotland…to Shetland…to Nova Scotia… or who simply enjoys top quality music and song – this concert is a must.

The Melbourne Scottish Fiddlers have a loyal following and their exhilarating performances always draw an enthusiastic crowd. They have recorded seven CDs and regularly collaborate with some of the world’s best traditional musicians, including American-based Alasdair Fraser & Natalie Haas, Ross Couper and Catriona McKay from the Shetland Islands, and homegrown heroes such as Chris Duncan, Catherine Strutt, Chris Stone and Catherine Fraser.

This special afternoon concert will be opened by esteemed tradition bearer Fiona Ross, who will perform a set of Scottish songs. Born and brought up in Glasgow, Scotland, Fiona is now one of Blackwood’s own. Fiona has a deep knowledge and understanding of the Scots song tradition. She was finalist for Scots Singer of the Year in Scotland’s prestigious Trad Music Awards. Her most recent album, Sunwise Turn, (with guitar maestro Shane O’Mara) won Music Victoria’s Best Folk Album Award.
