Film screenings another social activity

It may seem that every film out these days either revolves around a superhero or is a cheap comedy, but a group of Ballan residents have decided to celebrate cinema with a new society.
The Ballan Film Society, in association with the Ballan Community House, screens films monthly at the Ballan Mechanics Hall.
Film Society President Rodney Browne said the idea for the society came about “two or three years ago,” as local members in the community wanted to find a way to share their love of film.
“A group of like-minded people wanted something a bit more interesting, and not so mainstream,” he said.
Mr Browning said it’s also an “opportunity to utilize the Ballan Mechanics’ Hall” for film screenings, following the society’s $3,000 grant from Moorabool Shire Council for a projector and screen.
Last month’s screening of dark comedy The Lobster garnered over 24 viewers, with Mr Browne hoping for around “20 people as regulars, but even more.”
Although the society has screened recent films, Mr Browne hopes to “try and reintroduce films.”
“Everyone’s always focusing on what’s next but would also like to shed light on films that haven’t been seen,” he said, mentioning he would like to focus on films from various eras and genres.
The society’s next film screening will be the 2018 Best Picture nominee Lady Bird on Sunday, 10 March from 3pm.
Tickets will be available at the door (cash only), with annual membership costing $75, or $30 for a three-film pass over 12-months.
