If you would like to attend a unique spring fashion event without splurging, then Ballan’s Op Shop Fashion Parade is your destination.

Barbara and Jackie of Ballan Hospital Auxiliary highlighted the essence of this event.

“We have the fashion parade prior to the racing season to show how you can dress very cheaply and very elegantly out of the modern op shops of today.”

The parade, priced at a modest $10 entry, is set to take place on Friday 27 October 2023 at Mechanics Hall (enter via Stieglitz Street entrance). The doors swing open at 6pm, with the event running from 6.30 PM to 8.30pm and “everyone is welcome.”

The night promises not just a show of affordable elegance but a celebration of the community spirit that defines Ballan’s op shops.

“You only have to walk into our shop. I’ve just bought a whole lot of stuff that I took home to press and all brand new, with the tags on and everything”, Steptoes Manager Fred told the Moorabool News.

Running an op shop is rewarding, but it comes with its challenges. The commitment to quality and community is apparent when talking with Fred and David.

“You can’t run an op shop these days if you put rubbish in. The quality these days means you need to be on top of your game.”

Guests can anticipate in a lively evening with local op shop models showcasing the finest thrift finds. To make the evening even more enticing, refreshments are included in the ticket price. Plus, there’s a nod to Ballan IGA and Ballan Neighbourhood House, who have generously supported the event.

David of Mecwacare Op Shop, part of the event planning team for the second year, invites those interested in modelling thrifty finds.

“We do still have space for community models to get involved, and we’ll help you out,” he said.

The Ballan Fashion Parade also stands as a reminder of the dedication of its enduring volunteers, many of whom have been with an op shop for years. The funds from the event are earmarked for aged care, ensuring attendees not only enjoy a fabulous evening but also contribute to a local cause.

The Ballan Op Shops say, attendees can expect fun, fashion, and community spirit.

“Nothing we do here in our op shops is a chore. We have a lot of fun, and we make it fun,” said Fred.

For anyone keen on attending, it’s crucial to book in advance by contacting Barbara at 0427 202 231. And if you’re intrigued by the op shop community, they’re always eager for new volunteers.
