A MUCH-loved Ballan community member has been thanked for his contribution to Ilo Kendall Early Education Centre which is scheduled to open next month.

Walter Guppy hand crafted wooden horses and a wagon 30 years ago using real horsehair for their manes and tails.

Last week Mr Guppy donated the one-of-a-kind items to the Early Education Centre and met with centre manager Slavica Harrison.

“Wally just happened to live about one street from the childcare centre,” said Ms Harrison.

“He wanted to give his beautiful horses away and he stopped into the childcare centre and showed us some photos of him making them 30 years ago.

“He wanted to do something more with them, so they weren’t just sitting at home.”

The horses feature real horsehair manes and tails.

Ms Harrison said it was a generous donation and that Mr Guppy is looking forward to sharing the history of the Clydesdales with the children.

“We were just amazed with his generosity to be able to donate these to the children,” she said.

“He thought what a great way for the children to explore a bit of the history as well because something handcrafted 30 years ago is something you don’t see a lot these days.

“Establishing strong community links enhances children’s learning experiences and provides valuable learning opportunities through collaborative relationships with community members.”
