Dangerous hoon drivers are being put on notice with a new panel to consider ways to further strengthen Victoria’s anti-hoon measures.

A Hooning Community Reference Group will be established after an increase in reckless driving behaviour during the coronavirus pandemic.

Victoria has some of the toughest anti-hoon legislation in the country to stop dangerous drivers in their tracks, with penalties including on-the-spot licence suspensions for excessive speeding, as well as police powers to impound and permanently confiscate vehicles. Some councils have additional measures via by-laws, including fines for attendees at hooning events.

The new reference group will bring together community and stakeholders with experts in road safety across government, enforcement and research bodies to develop a new Victorian Hoon Driving Action Plan.

It will focus on identifying potential short, medium and long-term solutions to increase education, improve early intervention and support deterrence in key hooning hot spots across Melbourne’s north, west and south-east.

Local voices, ideas and opportunities will also be heard later this year at a series of targeted community roundtables, including in regional areas, to inform local action plans.

You can register your interest in attending community engagement sessions by emailing [email protected].
