Hunger on the rise

Foodbank’s Hunger Report for 2020 has painted a concerning picture of Australia’s food relief situation – and they’re concerns that hit local food relief efforts too.
Foodbank conducted a number of surveys and interviews with individuals and charities, with some of the most worrying findings being that the number of people seeking food relief weekly had more than doubled since the same time last year, 28 per cent of those experiencing food insecurity had never experienced it before COVID-19, and demand for food relief had increased by an average of 47 per cent since COVID-19 was declared a pandemic.
Jackie Tabone, who runs the Bacchus Marsh food relief organisation The Neighbour’s Place, said these were all issues she had observed, and had affected the organisation too.
