MORE than seven hundred golf balls rained down on Darley Park on the weekend, and a premiership hero walked away ten thousand dollars richer as a result.

Though it wasn’t a happy day on the scoreboard for the Devils, going down 37 to 104 to the Melton Bloods, the half time event might have softened the blow for Billy Myers.

Players and spectators were cleared from the ground, and a helicopter descended until it was hovering over where a golf tee had been set up.

About 740 golf balls were dropped from the helicopter, with the closest to the tee, and the winner of the $10,000 prize, being the ball marked Q42, which had been purchased by Billy Myers.

Darley Football Netball Club senior president, Mark Shelly, thanked all those who had purchased balls for the event, with proceeds going towards new netball seating.

“We ended up raising about $37,000 on the day, which was fantastic,” Mr Shelly said.

“It’s an outstanding effort by both the junior and senior clubs, we’re just overwhelmed by the generosity and support from both our own members, and the wider community.

“What we’ll do now is put a submission to the Bacchus Marsh Community Bank, we’re in the process of that with a view to them hopefully coming on board to help us out with the additional funds.

“We’re hoping to have that seating in place before the end of the season.”

Mr Shelly also gave thanks to the many volunteers who had made the helicopter ball drop event possible.

“A massive thank you to all involved, these things take a fair bit to pull off,” he said.

“We were well and truly overwhelmed by the response we got leading up to the event, and also on the day itself.”
