Mosquito health warning
Mosquito numbers are high at the moment thanks to the humidity and heavy rains, and the Department of Health has issued a warning for mosquito-borne diseases.
Ross River virus is of particular concern, and is endemic to most areas across Victoria, particularly around inland waterways and coastal regions.
Symptoms can include headache, fever, rash, joint pain and stiffness, muscle pain and fatigue.
The most effective way to reduce the risk of contracting Ross River virus, and other mosquito-borne diseases, is by avoiding mosquito bites and removing any mosquito breeding sites around your home.
Preventative measures to avoid being bitten by mosquitoes include covering up, using mosquito repellents containing picaridin or DEET on all exposed skin, using mosquito coils in small outdoor gathering areas, and removing stagnant water around your home or campsite.
