New citizens celebrated
AUSTRALIA Day saw thirty-two new citizens welcomed to the Moorabool Shire community at a ceremony in Ballan.
The ceremony, held at Ballan Mechanics’ Institute, included migrants from countries such as Iran, Romania, Malaysia, New Zealand, Philippines, Argentina, United Kingdom, Thailand, India, Poland, Pakistan and United Arab Emirates.
Mayor Cr Paul Tatchell said January 26 is an important opportunity to reflect on what it means to be Australian.
“Australia Day is a time for us to give a warm welcome to our newest citizens and acknowledge the importance of what it means to become a full member of the Australian community,” he said.
“There is no greater privilege than our citizenship. It’s a life-long commitment to Australia’s values of freedom, democracy, equality and respect.”
An Australian citizenship affirmation ceremony was also held where community members congratulated and welcomed new citizens.
“I congratulate those becoming Australian citizens on making their commitment to Australia” Cr Tatchell said.
