New Hawke officially roosts
The ‘projected winner’ of the new seat of Hawke has officially been declared the electorate’s inaugural MP by the Australian Electoral Commission (AEC).
Sam Rae was Labor’s candidate for the new seat at the federal election in May, which takes in Bacchus Marsh, Ballan, Melton, and Sunbury.
Despite a significant swing against the major parties (-7.4% for Labor and -3% for the Liberals on first preferences), Mr Rae was elected the MP for Hawke with 57.6 per cent of preferences in the final count, to his Liberal opponent Enamul Haque’s 42.4 per cent.
Rae was confirmed as Hawke’s MP by the AEC at 2 pm on Wednesday 15 June, and said it was “an honour and a privilege to represent the people of Hawke in the Australian Parliament”.
