A NEW library in the centre of Moorabool Shire is one step closer to completion, with the municipal development committee approving plans for the project recently.

Designs for the Ballan Library and Community Hub came before councillors at the 21 February Development Assessment Committee, with members unanimously supporting the project.

Currently, the library operates out of the Ballan Mechanics Institute.

However, the planned two-storey, purpose-built facility will include seating areas, a dedicated children’s library, meeting rooms, maternal child health rooms, laptop and computer spaces, public amenities, staff rooms, and a courtyard.

The new library will be located at 127 Inglis Street at Ballan, the site of a former Commonwealth Bank branch, which closed in August 2021 and was purchased by Shire officers in November that year.

At council’s ordinary meeting on 7 February, general manager of community assets and infrastructure Phil Jeffrey said tenders had recently closed for the project’s construction and were currently being evaluated.

“Subject to council awarding a contract for the project, it is anticipated the works will commence by June 2024 and be completed by August or September 2025, noting that a final program will be agreed with the successful contractor,” he said.
