A SERIES of plant giveaways held by Moorabool Shire Council has been a major success, with over 5,000 plants provided across five events.

Events were held from March to May at Egans Reserve, the Ballan Autumn Festival, Lal Lal Soldiers Memorial, the Gordon Recreation Reserve, and Lerderderg Library, providing up to 10 native plants per household to Moorabool residents.

The most recent event, held in Bacchus Marsh, saw around 1,200 plants given away.

Grown by the team at the Moorabool Landcare Nursery, the free plants on offer included river red gums, hop goodenias, and kangaroo grass, just to name a few species.

Residents not only got some beautiful plants for free, but were also playing their part in protecting and enhancing Moorabool Shire’s unique environment by planting the natives in their gardens.

More than 5,500 native tube stock plants were given away by Council’s Environment and Waste team over the three-month period, with demand well exceeding the number of plants available.

A spokesperson for Moorabool Shire Council said that the Environment and Waste team “aim to unveil more initiatives that empower residents to play an active role in environmental stewardship”.
