Poisonous mushroom warning
The Chief Health Officer has issued an advisory notice to Victorians, warning the community of poisonous mushrooms growing in the state this autumn.
Yellow-staining mushrooms and Death Cap mushrooms are known to grow in Victoria during the autumn months, with consumption of the latter possibly resulting in death.
There is no home test available to tell safe, edible mushrooms from poisonous ones.
To avoid poisoning, the Department of Health advises that you should only eat mushrooms purchased from a supermarket, greengrocer or other reputable source.
Cooking, peeling, or drying these poisonous mushrooms does not remove or inactivate the poison.
