Sick pay for casuals
This is big.
It’s an Australian first.
And it kicks off today.
For most Victorians, if you wake up feeling sick, you can take sick leave.
But if you’re a casual worker, you have to make the choice between a day’s pay and looking after your health.
It’s a choice you shouldn’t have to make.
So we’ve done something about it.
Starting today, workers in casual and insecure work in eligible industries will be able to access five days of sick pay per year.
Workers in hospo, food preparation, cleaning, security, laundries, supermarkets, retail, as well as aged and disability care will all be able to take time off if they’re sick, or to take care of a loved one.
The Government is doing all the admin for the program, and making payments directly to workers – meaning no extra paperwork for businesses.
It means that more than 150,000 Victorians will no longer have to choose between being able to pay rent and looking after their health.
Because no one should have to go to work sick because they can’t afford not to.
And now – they don’t.
