Variety of sports on one oval

A small school has received funding to upgrade their oval and improve the water drainage system, and they couldn’t be happier.

Coimadai Primary School received over $170,000 in State Government funding for the works.

The school was successful in its application during Round 1 of the ‘Minor Capital Works Fund’ as announced on 2 December 2020, and the works the grant made possible finished earlier this month.

The school’s Principal, Moira Ross, said they had applied for a grant last year, but the amount given was a welcome surprise.

“We built a new sporting oval and had it all beautifully landscaped. The kids just love it, they’re playing more sport. It’s a running track, a soccer oval, hockey, and tee-ball, all combined. So more of our kids are now playing soccer and hockey in particular,” she told the Moorabool News.

“Everyone’s more active. We actually put in just to re-seed our oval, but we got given more so it was a nice surprise. During remote learning while students were at home, we were updating them with what was going on at school. It was nice for them to come back to the upgrades.”

Member for Macedon, Mary-Anne Thomas, visited Coimadai Primary on Friday 11 March to see how the $173,137 grant had been used.

“We’re making sure that our local schools have the best facilities and outdoor areas and that our classrooms have the best teachers so that every child is given every chance to succeed,” she said.

“Our local students can now enjoy great new facilities at Coimadai.”

The Minor Capital Works Fund was allocated $20 million under the Victorian Budget for 2021/22, and aims to “improve learning spaces as well as the condition and character of schools”.

The Fund has so far allocated funding to over 300 Victorian government schools.
