UNDERSTANDING Osteoarthritis

Osteoarthritis (OA) is one of the most common health conditions worldwide—affecting more people over 65 than diabetes or high blood pressure. It involves the entire joint, not just the cartilage, which is why symptoms can include stiffness, swelling, weakness, and reduced mobility.

The good news? Osteoarthritis doesn’t have to mean a lifetime of pain or inevitable surgery. Research shows that lifestyle changes—particularly exercise and education—can slow its progression and dramatically improve quality of life. That’s where GLA:D® (Good Life with osteoarthritis in Denmark) comes in.

What is GLA:D® Australia?

GLA:D® Australia is a not-for-profit initiative led by La Trobe University, bringing this internationally recognised program to Australians living with hip or knee osteoarthritis. Developed by researchers in Denmark, the program reflects the latest evidence and real-world feedback from people with OA.

Osteoarthritis doesn’t have to mean a lifetime of pain or inevitable surgery.

Why GLA:D® Stands Out

Unlike quick fixes such as medication or braces, GLA:D® empowers participants to self-manage their condition. By strengthening muscles, improving movement, and building confidence, the program reduces strain on joints and helps protect them for the future.

It teaches strategies to help participants reduce symptoms, build confidence, and stay active.

Program Structure

The GLA:D® Australia program includes:

–Initial appointment – introduction to the program and baseline assessment

–Two education sessions – covering OA, risk factors, treatment, and self-management strategies

–Group exercise classes – twice a week for six weeks, designed to improve strength and joint control

–Three-month review – to track progress and reset goals

–Questionnaires – completed at registration, 3 months, and 12 months to measure changes in pain, function, quality of life, and medication use

Proven Results

More than 20,000 participants worldwide have completed the program. Research from the GLA:D® Australia Annual Report 2023 found:

Pain reduced by 23 per cent (hip) and 31 per cent (knee)Quality of life improved by 24 per cent (hip) and 38 per cent (knee)Pain medication use reduced by nearly half at 12 months.
