A busy day was held at the Bacchus Marsh Little Athletics Centre last Saturday morning.  The day commenced with Centre President, Maria Downes announcing the official 2022/23 season open. The opening had been postponed while the renovations to the Pat Lane Pavilion were completed. Life Members and Distinguished Service Members were invited to attend and celebrate this special occasion.

This week was Little Athletics Australia’s Coles Community Round. Bacchus Marsh athletes, family and friends were encouraged to get creative wearing something red or Coles themed. This was a great way to celebrate the partnership Coles has with all Centres throughout Australia.

Once the formalities were finished the events quickly got underway. First up on the track were the open age athletes competing in their long hurdles events. The highlight was in the Boys Under 13 200m hurdles race, where Blues athlete, Nicholas Mai broke the first Centre record for the season. Nick ran a new Centre record time of 30.58 seconds.

The buzz around the Centre was electric and the arrival of special guest, Coles Ambassador and Australian Olympian, Matthew Denny saw crowds quickly gather around the front straight. Matt joined in with the Under 8 boys as they competed in the hurdles event. All scheduled events were then put on hold while the Centre conducted several family Banana relay races, with Matt participating too. Matt then held a special Q&A time with the athletes before heading over to the Discus cage to put on a throwing display for everyone. The excitement from the kids was priceless as Matt threw the Discus out into the midfield of Masons Lane Reserve – showing why he is Australia’s Discus Champion. Matt then judged the best dressed athletes and presented Coles vouchers to 12 lucky winners. Representatives from Little Athletics Victoria, Coles Australia marketing department and Coles Bacchus Marsh were also in attendance.

This Saturday’s meet will be program 4. Eagles Club are on set-up duty from 7.30am.
