Popular Bacchus Marsh Premiership defender Daniel Velden will play his 300th senior game in this Saturday’s BFNL season opener against Ballarat at Maddingley Park.

The 37-year-old, ahead of his 20th and final season was thrilled knowing the milestone occasion had finally arrived.

“I was eyeing off my 300th in 2020 but covid put pay to that,” Veldon said.

“And again last year, covid left me stranded on 299 (games).”

The school teacher and father of two has witnessed firsthand the changes in football since his debut (ironically) against the Swans way back in 2003.

“(The increase in) the speed of the game is definitely the most notable (change),” Veldon said.

And as for the rivalry with cross-town foe Darley?

“When I started it was ruthless,” he said.

“It’s tempered a little since into a healthier, more competitive (than combative) style.”

There’s a collective narrative among 300 gamers that extends beyond football – they’re more often resilient, self motivated, quality human beings and Daniel is no exception. Cobras Coach Tom German (2020-) shed light on Daniel the player, and Daniel the man ahead of his remarkable achievement.
