Cobras through to grand final
By Tim Saultry
Cool and windy conditions greeted the Cobras in their Second Semi-final clash against minor premier Carisbrook at Sebastopol. With a Grand Final berth at stake both teams were ready for action.
The girls play in the AFL Goldfields Women’s Football Division 2 and were quick off the mark, kicking into the wind, with a soccer goal to Pazsa. The majority of the quarter was spent defending well. Scott and Yeatman provided plenty of run allowing Cobras to go into quarter time with scores level at 1.1.7 each
Next quarter was the chance for Cobras to use the wind to their advantage but Carisbrook had other ideas, defending stoutly and scoring the first goal of the quarter to put scoreboard pressure back on the Cobras.
Bertram kept Carisbrook at bay with some inspirational smothering. Pazsa managed to soccer another goal against the run of play. Crawford’s strong running and good ball movement cumulated in a running snap to put Bacchus Marsh up at half time by six points.
The third quarter saw Carisbrook control the air and their fluid ball movement allowed them to outscore the Cobras two goals to one. Reid was leading the defence effort well. Scott scored the important sole goal for Bacchus Marsh against the wind after a fortunate push in the back near the goal
The last quarter was an epic battle with Carisbrook scoring the first goal against the wind to extend the lead putting the pressure on. The first half of the quarter saw the ball locked in the Carisbrook forward line as Bacchus Marsh defended grimily. Eventually Clarke goaled for the Cobras to putting them in front.
An inspirational snap from Best On Ground Crawford broke the deadlock, putting the Cobras in front by nine points with victory in sight. With less than two minutes to go, Clarke put the icing on the cake after a strong mark and goal much to the joy of her team mates.
It was a great victory as determination won through against a very worthy and skilled opponent.
Bacchus Marsh will play the winner of Preliminary final between Carisbrook and Drysdale in the Grand Final in two weeks’ time.
