Darley’s fighting seven wicket win over North Ballarat has been overshadowed by the imminent departure of star batting all-rounder Danza Hyatt, who prepares for a return to his native Jamaica in the coming days.

Hyatt’s 56 game contribution over three seasons has been significant to say the least, both on and off the field, and was duly recognised by his peers on Saturday night as “the best they’ve seen”.

Lions coach Brian Wheelahan, Club President Tim Gallagher and Life Member David Hoey, addressed a core group of Lions faithful at the Darley Hub on Saturday night to reflect on Hyatt’s achievements and how he’s changed the dynamic of how others see the Darley Cricket Club, still riding high on the back of dual BCA First Grade Premierships.

“You can’t replace champions,” Wheelahan said.

“We’ve been so fortunate to have a player of Danza’s ilk with us for the last three seasons – he hits the ball like no-one I’ve seen (at this level).

“While we’ll miss Danza, and recognise challenges lay ahead (in his absence), we’re hopeful the opportunity that awaits the incumbent is taken with both hands.”

President Tim Gallagher recognised the influence Hyatt has had on the youth at the club acknowledging ‘already made’ progress on field.

“Some of our youngsters have really come along, reaping the benefits of Danza’s experience and advice not only at training but in his own time as well,” he said.

“Our club is entirely grateful for Danza’s contribution”.

Life member David Hoey made some lighthearted observations on his time hosting Danza who initially stayed with his family ahead of his debut 2018/19 season. While ‘Dave’ openly conceded articulation was not his forte – he would soon exceed any (of his own) expectation to deliver in spades – an enlightening verse full of humour, warmth and appreciation.

“I never thought I would see any better than Matthew Cape – that’s how good Danza is,” he said.
