PAST players from the Ballan Tennis Club are invited to a reunion to be held at the club this Sunday 12 October.

The club was formed in 1888.

“A group of us who used to play at the club got together earlier this year and decided we should try and get a few more former players together for a reunion,” said Denis Conroy.

“We used to play in the Mooney Cup which was named after a player from early last century, Chris Mooney.

“The date was set for the second weekend in October which was when the tennis season used to start.

“Unfortunately, the club is in recess at the moment due to lack of office bearers, but I believe there will be a meeting soon to try and resurrect the club.

“That would be great as there are a lot of people in the district who I am sure would love to play, especially youngsters.

“Moorabool Shire rebuilt the three courts after COVID and they are some of the best in the district.”

Mr Conroy believes there will be at least 100 people coming to the reunion.

“We have a good cross section of people coming,” he said.

“Among them will be Brian Mullane, a former club champion who is in his late 80s.

“Local scouts will be providing a barbecue on the day, and the cricket club will be opening their bar.

“We also decided to have afternoon tea, as we had in in the old days with people bringing a plate.

“A lot of people said they will bring along the same things they brought for afternoon tea in their playing days.

“There will be a display of tennis memorabilia, and some people will be bringing their racquets.

“The mayor, Cr Paul Tatchell, is a former player and he will be coming along to welcome everyone and talk about the new complex.

“Former players and their families are very welcome to attend as well as anyone from the teams we competed against.”
