Bacchus Marsh Little Athletics’ Nelson Banigo has claimed two gold medals for Victoria at the recent Coles Australian Little Athletics Championships.

Nelson led off in both the 4 x100m and medley relays for Victoria to help the Under 13 boys teams to victory over nearest rivals Queensland and New South Wales.

Nelson also placed fourth in the individual 100m dash after qualifying fastest in his heat, narrowly missing the podium by 0.06 seconds. He lists the legendary Usain Bolt as his sporting role model, was humble in his achievements over the weekend.

“It feels really good to not only represent myself by my coach, my family and the rest of Victoria,” he said.

“I’ve never competed at a national competition before and it’s great to get a medal at my first one. My dad was here to watch me, and the rest of the family watched on livestream.”

Coles Little Athletics Australia President Sherrie Boulter said the Championships were an excellent way to conclude a successful summer season for Little Athletics in Australia.

“The event has been sorely missed by everyone and to have our best Under 13 and Under 15 athletes competing for their state once again is extremely important for the Little Athletics pathway and for the kids to showcase their talent on a national stage.”

Nelson was one of 43 Under 13 and Under 15 athletes chosen to represent Victoria at the national event, which was held for the first time in three years due to COVID restrictions.
