NAIDOC Week events in the shire to mark 50 ‘Deadly’ years
WURUNDJERI Elder Uncle Colin Hunter Jr will lead a Welcome to Country and smoking ceremony marking the start of NAIDOC Week celebrations in Moorabool Shire.
NAIDOC Week runs from 5–12 July nationally, and local celebrations get started on Tuesday 7 July at the Village Green in Bacchus Marsh with the Welcome to Country from 10am, followed by a morning tea, with everyone welcome.
Moorabool residents are invited to come together and mark the week through a series of free events which aim to recognise and honour the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
“We are proud to celebrate 50 years of NAIDOC Week as we acknowledge the generations of Elders, leaders, artists, advocates and community members whose dedication has helped shape the nation and inspire future generations,” Moorabool Shire mayor Cr Steve Venditti-Taylor said.
On Friday 10 July families are invited to the Ballan Library from 2.30pm to enjoy a special crafts activity designed to celebrate Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture in a fun and engaging way.

At 3.30pm the Ballan Library courtyard will then set the scene for another Welcome to Country and smoking ceremony led by Wadawurrung Traditional Owner Shannen Mennen, followed by afternoon tea.
This year’s theme, 50 Years of Deadly, marks a significant milestone celebrating five decades of NAIDOC Week and recognises the strength, resilience and contributions of First Nations People across Australia.
NAIDOC co-chair Steven Satour said this year’s NAIDOC Week theme marks both a milestone and a moment of responsibility.
“50 Years of Deadly recognises the leadership and cultural authority that carried this movement forward and affirms that NAIDOC’s next chapter will be shaped by community leadership, long-term vision, and a stronger, more sustainable future,” Satour said.
