New legislation has come before the State Parliament which the Andrews Government has promoted as \u201cgiving ratepayers a fair go\u201d \u2013 but some in local government have raised suspicions at the timing of the bill.<\/p>\n

The \u2018Local Government Amendment (Rating Reform and Other Matters) Bill 2022\u2019 will limit how councils can pursue ratepayer debts, including a ban on the use of debt collectors or legal action, \u201cunless ratepayers refuse to engage, and all other options have been exhausted\u201d.<\/p>\n

It will also allow the Minister for Local Government, in consultation with the Essential Services Commission (ESC), to set a maximum amount of interest levied on unpaid rates and charges.<\/p>\n
