\u201cWe are hanging in there\u201d and \u201cso appreciative\u201d of all the support.
\nThey are the words of reinswoman Monique Burnett who spoke to RSN 927 last week about the horrific blaze that overwhelmed the family\u2019s Forbes barn in the early hours of Friday 8 July, resulting in the tragic death of 12 horses.
\n\u201cWe just want to thank everyone so much for all the generosity and support,\u201d Burnett said.
\n\u201cThe way that we\u2019ve been brought up, you\u2019ve got to get up and you\u2019ve got to move forward. All the other horses need our help and to be looked after, so everyone\u2019s just literally pushing through.\u201d
\nBurnett said her mum, trainer Rita, was \u201cputting on a brave front, as she\u2019s always done\u201d.
\n\u201cShe\u2019s very appreciative (of the support),\u201d Monique said. \u201cThis morning she had a bit of a headache and was a bit run down. On the night of she was there front and centre trying to run into a fire to save horses and having to be held back.\u201d
\nMonique said during the fire \u201ceverything just happened in minutes, seconds, and it was just chaos\u201d, adding the 24-horse barn \u201cheld most of our stuff – veterinary supplies, rugs \u2026 everything\u2019s all gone\u201d.
\nThe tragic fire has prompted an extraordinary response from the harness racing community, with more than $100,000 across 292 donations pledged on a mycause fundraising page.
\n\u201cI honestly just can\u2019t believe it,\u201d Monique said. \u201cIt\u2019s literally so overwhelming the support. I\u2019m so appreciative, but our little industry just seems to pull together and help out when things get tough. In a way it\u2019s not unexpected, but the appreciation is unbelievable.\u201d
\nForbes is a small Victorian town within the Mitchell Shire, it is located approximately 56kms from Melbourne. Forbes has a recorded population of 126 residents.<\/p>\n
