A new, free activity book has been released by Parks Victoria, connecting kids to the land we live on and the Traditional Owners who have cared for it for tens of thousands of years.<\/p>\n
The \u2018Junior Rangers Connection to Country: Wadawurrung\u2019 activity book was released during NAIDOC Week, and provides free, educational fun for kids, perfect for rainy winter days.<\/p>\n
The activity book was produced in collaboration with Wadawurrung Traditional Owners, whose Country includes Ballan in the Moorabool Shire.<\/p>\n
Proud Wadawurrung woman, Ebonee Cook, wrote and developed the resource, alongside members of the Wadawurrung Traditional Owner Aboriginal Corporation. Ms Cook is the Community Engagement Ranger with Parks Victoria.<\/p>\n
She said developing it had been \u201ca great accomplishment in her career\u201d, and she was proud to help kids learn about the Wadawurrung People.<\/p>\n
\u201cCollaborating with Wadawurrung Traditional Owners Aboriginal Corporation has provided the opportunity to educate others about Wadawurrung culture and the importance of caring for Country. This booklet is a reminder that our culture is strong. Wadawurrung People have cared for and sustainably managed these lands for thousands of years,\u201d Ms Cook said.<\/p>\n
\u201cHowever, caring for Country is something that everyone can do. Connecting others to culture, provides a sense of appreciation and contributes to a collaborative approach to looking after Country. If Country is healthy, we all benefit.\u201d<\/p>\n
The booklet takes an environmentalist stance, teaching kids the importance of land, waterways, and native plants and animals. It features a word find puzzle, colouring in, and artwork by Wadawurrung Visual Artist Jenna Oldaker, illustrating the beauty of Wadawurrung Country including the Youang (big hill) region, kangaroos track, and Bundjil the eagle.<\/p>\n
