The State Government has committed to supporting regional media in Moorabool Shire with guaranteed advertising revenue for newspapers, should it win the upcoming election.<\/p>\n
Regional media was hit hard during the pandemic lockdowns, particularly free newspapers which rely on advertising to operate.<\/p>\n
Growing costs of printing paper and production \u2013 compounded by Norske Skog closing its Tasman paper mill on 30 June this year \u2013 have dealt another blow to newspapers and their future.<\/p>\n
This month, the Andrews Government committed to a guaranteed full page of advertising in every regional newspaper per week, building on the support provided throughout the pandemic.<\/p>\n
Acting Editor of the Moorabool News Lachlan Ellis, welcomed the announcement.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe current state government threw a lifeline out to newspapers when COVID hit and has continued their support, this is very welcome news,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
Mr Ellis clarified the guaranteed full page is actually the \u2018equivalent of\u2019.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe may receive two full pages in one edition, the following week there may not be a placement,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
This included a $2.7 million grant to Australian Associated Press to support regional print and broadcast journalism, and a further $20 million provided throughout the pandemic for advertising in regional media outlets.<\/p>\n
Labor candidate for Eureka, Michaela Settle, said regional print media plays a vital role in keeping our communities informed on local issues.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe know that regional people love and need their local news, and that local papers are central to keeping the unique feel of rural and regional living,\u201d Ms Settle said.<\/p>\n
