{"id":1281,"date":"2017-09-21T00:25:07","date_gmt":"2017-09-21T00:25:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/themooraboolnews.com.au\/?p=1281"},"modified":"2024-02-02T16:45:16","modified_gmt":"2024-02-02T05:45:16","slug":"and-its-goodnight-from-him","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/themooraboolnews\/news\/and-its-goodnight-from-him\/","title":{"rendered":"And its goodnight from him"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>By Kate Taylor<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Geoff Howard, Member for Buninyong, has announced that he will not be contesting the next state election.<br \/>\nWith Labor pre-selections opening soon ahead of the 2018 state election, Mr Howard announced last week that he will not be putting his name forward.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHaving had the honour of serving the people of Ballarat East (1999) and Buninyong (2014) in parliament, I believe it\u2019s time to begin a new phase of my life,\u201d Mr Howard wrote in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI also believe the timing is right to provide the opportunity for a new face to take on the Buninyong seat. I know there are a number of promising people within Ballarat Labor who could become strong representatives and bring fresh ideas.\u201d<br \/>\nBallarat East was the most marginal Liberal-held electorate in the state prior to Mr Howard\u2019s election in 1999, but has since been considered a safe Labor seat.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFew people including me would have believed that I would be here 18 years later and get to enjoy the privilege of choosing my own time to exit public office. I\u2019m pleased that I will leave with Labor\u2019s position here greatly improved from when I was first elected.\u201d<br \/>\nMr Howard\u2019s announcement means that Moorabool\u2019s two largest seats will emerge from the state election with all-new faces \u2013 Member for Melton Don Nardella has already announced that he will not be contesting the next election either.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By Kate Taylor Geoff Howard, Member for Buninyong, has announced that he will not be contesting the next state election.
