{"id":1342,"date":"2017-10-12T09:00:38","date_gmt":"2017-10-12T09:00:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/themooraboolnews.com.au\/?p=1342"},"modified":"2024-02-02T16:52:38","modified_gmt":"2024-02-02T05:52:38","slug":"educating-whats-inside","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/themooraboolnews\/news\/educating-whats-inside\/","title":{"rendered":"Educating what\u2019s inside"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>By Jessica Howard<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A Bacchus Marsh mother has written a new book that is breaking down the barriers of autism.<\/p>\n<p><em>The Boy with a Different Brain<\/em>\u00a0has been a five-year project for Brooke Ross that provides readers with an honest and uncensored account of what it feels like to be friends with a person with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD).<\/p>\n<p>Brooke, who has an 11-year-old son on the Spectrum, said the narrative provides the audience with everyday situations and some of the more common ASD quirks in order to create a greater understanding of the disorder.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEvery child will deal with bullying at one time or another, but it took me a while to realise that a lot of kids were giving others a hard time simply because they didn\u2019t unders<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-thumbnail wp-image-1345\" src=\"https:\/\/themooraboolnews.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/IMG_9218111-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/>tand,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor years we have educated our kids on the differences you can see. Children don\u2019t blink an eye about someone in a wheelchair or their different skin colour as we are very accepting now, however very little awareness has been raised about the differences that you can\u2019t see \u2013 such as neurological things like ASD or ADHD (attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder)\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Brooke said <em>The Boy with a Different Brain<\/em> was written from the perspective of an eight-year-old child to address the bullying and social exclusion commonly experienced by children with ASD.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOne in five people have ASD, whether diagnosed or not, and when you\u2019ve got kids that are bullying them, you can\u2019t just put them in detention at lunch time, you\u2019ve got to help them to understand why the person they\u2019re bullying is different to them.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cKids with ASD aren\u2019t broken or weird, they just do things differently\u201d.<\/p>\n<p><em>The Boy with a Different Brain<\/em> targets children in grades prep to four and features bright hand-drawn illustrations by Bacchus Marsh Primary School grade-six student Sky McBain.<br \/>\nFeaturing an engaging mix of storybook fact and age-appropriate humour, the book can be purchased online for $19.95.<\/p>\n<p>For more information, visit <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hbe.com.au\/the-boy-with-a-different-brain.html\">www.hbe.com.au\/the-boy-with-a-different-brain.html<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By Jessica Howard A Bacchus Marsh mother has written a new book that is breaking down the barriers of autism.
