{"id":13757,"date":"2023-02-22T06:00:39","date_gmt":"2023-02-21T19:00:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/themooraboolnews.com.au\/?p=13757"},"modified":"2024-02-01T18:14:27","modified_gmt":"2024-02-01T07:14:27","slug":"hearty-lions-made-to-pay","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/themooraboolnews\/sport\/hearty-lions-made-to-pay\/","title":{"rendered":"Hearty Lions made to pay"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>By Todd Whelan<\/p>\n<p><strong>Darley Cricket Club<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Expect BCA title contenders Darley to waste little time lamenting Saturday&#8217;s two wicket loss to Wendouree as the penultimate round of the home and away season concluded.<\/p>\n<p>The Lions set the Reds a mediocre 170 runs for victory on day two and were seemingly in the box seat for a period as strike bowler Madushanka Ekanayake led the way with a five wicket haul to have the visitors in trouble at 8\/110. But just as the likelihood of an upset victory loomed reality, the Reds steadied to remain wicketless, seeing out the run chase with six overs to spare.<\/p>\n<p>Despite the narrow loss and what the Reds may themselves consider &#8216;the great escape&#8217;, Lions coach Brian Wheelahan was proud of his boy\u2019s effort with the ball.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Ekka bowled one of the finest spells to put us in a winning position,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;His pace, control, line and length bowling was phenomenal.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We lost the game last week pure and simple by not posting enough runs and building partnerships, including the tail which is exactly what they did.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>According to Wheelahan the hit-out against &#8216;the now&#8217; ladder leading Reds was the ideal preparation ahead of the business end.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Although we didn&#8217;t get the six points, the game was played with finals intent,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We certainly need to get a few things right heading into the last game and we&#8217;re confident the boys are ready to take full responsibility for what lies ahead.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We&#8217;re fully committed leaving no stone unturned, particularly with our preparation,&#8221; <\/p>\n<p>Wheelahan concluded his Round 16 brief acknowledging the effort of the Reds recovery, eventually reeling in the Lions total after a scare of their own.  <\/p>\n<p>&#8220;All credit to Wendouree and Heath Pyke&#8217;s unbeaten 80 to steer them home,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>For the record, it was the fifth time in nine innings this season Pyke has remained unbeaten.
