{"id":15188,"date":"2023-06-13T09:00:17","date_gmt":"2023-06-12T23:00:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/themooraboolnews.com.au\/?p=15188"},"modified":"2024-02-01T20:01:46","modified_gmt":"2024-02-01T09:01:46","slug":"big-freeze-is-back","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/themooraboolnews\/news\/big-freeze-is-back\/","title":{"rendered":"Big Freeze is back"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>By Lachlan Ellis<\/p>\n<p>The Bacchus Marsh and Greendale communities, in conjunction with Bacchus Marsh Football and Netball Club, are coming together once again to host the Big Freeze in the Marsh this Saturday.<\/p>\n<p>Raising funds and awareness for FightMND, this year\u2019s slide will be MC\u2019d by Doug Hawkins, who will no doubt take great delight in pushing the sliders into the icy waters after braving the slide himself last year.<\/p>\n<p>This year\u2019s event will take place at Maddingley Park at 1.45 pm, and will be held in memory of Greendale\u2019s Phil O\u2019Keefe, who fought hard against MND since being diagnosed in May 2015, but sadly passed away on 25 May this year.<\/p>\n<p>Mr O\u2019Keefe was the face of the Big Freeze in the Marsh, and participated in the trial of \u2018Stentrode\u2019 implant technology to help future sufferers of the condition.<\/p>\n<p>Event coordinator Anne Phyland said it was people like Mr O\u2019Keefe that would see the beast that is MND be finally defeated.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat Phil has done with the Stentrode trial is incredible. People like Phil, people like Neale Daniher, making sacrifices in the face of adversity and wanting to make a difference, even though it wouldn\u2019t benefit them in their lifetime, finding opportunities to help people from such an awful diagnosis, are so important in this fight,\u201d Ms Phyland told the Moorabool News.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis year we\u2019ll be sliding in Phil\u2019s memory basically. It\u2019s fairly raw and quite an emotional time, but this was certainly one of Phil\u2019s last wishes, that he wanted this to go ahead and nominated two of his friends to slide this year. He was passionate that this should continue, and continue raising awareness and funds for this cause.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>What makes MND so terrifying, and so worthy of fighting, Ms Phyland said, is that it\u2019s \u201cone of very few things where you get a diagnosis, and it\u2019s basically there\u2019s nothing you can do\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Bacchus Marsh and Greendale communities have been so supportive, banding together with the football club. It\u2019s something we feel really passionate about. We\u2019re hoping to get a good crowd to honour Phil\u2019s memory \u2013 it\u2019ll be a really special and emotional day,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis awful disease takes so much from people. With many people fighting MND, it takes away everything, and there\u2019s no hope without a treatment or a cure.
