{"id":16333,"date":"2023-09-08T09:37:37","date_gmt":"2023-09-07T23:37:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/themooraboolnews.com.au\/?p=16333"},"modified":"2024-02-01T16:15:06","modified_gmt":"2024-02-01T05:15:06","slug":"send-epa-a-soil-sample","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/themooraboolnews\/news\/send-epa-a-soil-sample\/","title":{"rendered":"Send EPA a soil sample"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>By Matt Romania<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Garden lovers, are you curious about what lurks beneath your flower beds and vegie patches? <\/p>\n<p>An opportunity has come about that\u2019s not just about nurturing plants, but also contributing to the state&#8217;s environmental research. <\/p>\n<p>Professor Mark Patrick Taylor, Chief Environmental Scientist at EPA Victoria, is calling upon Moorabool residents to join in on a novel endeavour.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;As the state\u2019s environmental authority, EPA Victoria recently launched a free-soil testing service for home gardeners,\u201d Professor Taylor said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re striving to map soil conditions all over the state, and while over 2,000 gardeners, mostly from Melbourne, have already responded, we need more participation from the Moorabool area.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>So, why should you, the green-thumbed resident of Moorabool Shire, consider this offer? <\/p>\n<p><strong>Here are five compelling reasons given by the EPA:<\/strong><br \/>\n\u2022\tCitizen science contribution: Participate in a large-scale research project and help EPA in their science-driven efforts.<br \/>\n\u2022\tDeep dive into soil quality: Your garden soil will be meticulously analysed for essential indicators such as texture, composition, nutrients, and organic carbon.<br \/>\n\u2022\tTrace element testing: Unearth potentially harmful elements in your soil, including lead, arsenic, and chromium.<br \/>\n\u2022\tFree insights: Apart from postage, there\u2019s no cost involved. Within two to four weeks, you&#8217;ll receive a comprehensive report on your soil\u2019s condition.<br \/>\n\u2022\tEnhanced garden health: Understand the quality of your soil better to improve the yield of your fruits and vegetables.<\/p>\n<p>A representative from EPA Victoria shed more light on the uptake<br \/>\n&#8220;We only have two participants from the Bacchus Marsh area so far. <\/p>\n<p>We&#8217;re keen to see that number grow. Any residential gardener is invited to send in soil samples.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Concerned about the level of expertise required? The call is not exclusively for veteran gardeners. Whether you tend to a basic garden or oversee a more expansive green space, your contribution is invaluable according to EPA Victoria. This initiative will offer a clearer picture of contamination sources and their impact on garden produce and health.<\/p>\n<p>In essence, this isn\u2019t merely about gardening.
