{"id":16340,"date":"2023-09-08T09:43:46","date_gmt":"2023-09-07T23:43:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/themooraboolnews.com.au\/?p=16340"},"modified":"2024-02-01T16:13:22","modified_gmt":"2024-02-01T05:13:22","slug":"workcover-sting-for-business","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/themooraboolnews\/news\/workcover-sting-for-business\/","title":{"rendered":"WorkCover sting for business"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>By Lachlan Ellis<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>While making sure injured workers are compensated is very important, a significant increase to WorkCover premiums has drawn frustration from businesses and lobby groups.<\/p>\n<p>The State Government announced earlier this year that WorkCover premiums would increase to 1.8 per cent \u2013 an increase of 42 per cent compared to last year\u2019s premiums \u2013 making Victoria\u2019s WorkCover the most expensive in the country.<\/p>\n<p>Victorian Chamber of Commerce and Industry Chief Executive Paul Guerra acknowledged the WorkSafe system needed reform, but said hitting employers with such a large increase wasn\u2019t the way forward.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe WorkSafe system is in trouble and it\u2019s clear it\u2019s been in trouble for a while, but slugging employers with premium increases, without any other reform measures, is not the answer. We need clear commitment to reform, and they must be legislated. We cannot be back here again next year with another premium increase,\u201d Mr Guerra said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEmployers and employees deserve holistic reform of the system with business and unions having a seat at the table to collaborate on practical, meaningful solutions. The Chamber must be involved in shaping a program to address the mental health crisis among our workforces and we are well placed to do this.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mr Guerra said that every business in the state wanted WorkCover to be viable, \u201cbut no business wants to wear increases of 40-plus percent on premiums\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cReform is required. The business community is willing to engage to guide that reform. The only way to prevent further increases of this nature is to deliver real reform of the system which would result in healthier and happier workplaces,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s not just businesses affected \u2013 the increase also raised eyebrows at Moorabool Shire Council\u2019s latest Ordinary Meeting on 2 August, with Council told it would pay a premium of $730,862 plus GST this year \u2013 an increase of just over $250,000 compared to the premium Council paid last year.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m just curious as to why\u2026did the Government provide any justification for such huge increases to WorkCover?\u201d Cr David Edwards asked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBar what was in the media about the WorkCover premiums going up around the state, and the deficiencies and deficits that exist in the program, there was no reason.
