{"id":17880,"date":"2024-01-05T08:00:55","date_gmt":"2024-01-04T21:00:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/themooraboolnews.com.au\/?p=17880"},"modified":"2024-01-31T19:54:45","modified_gmt":"2024-01-31T08:54:45","slug":"forestry-communities-mourn","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/themooraboolnews\/news\/forestry-communities-mourn\/","title":{"rendered":"Forestry communities mourn"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Timber Towns Victoria <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Timber Towns Victoria acknowledges a deep sadness and regret for the native timber harvesting communities and their families for the loss of regenerative native<br \/>\nmixed species forest harvesting from actively managed forests in Victoria.<\/p>\n<p>In Australia, forested landscapes are likely to have been actively and adaptively<br \/>\nmanaged by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples for over 60,000 years.<\/p>\n<p>In November 2019, the Victorian State Government announced a phase out of the<br \/>\nnative timber harvesting industry in Victoria by 2030. In May 2023, a new<br \/>\nannouncement brought the ban forward to commence 1 January 2024.<\/p>\n<p>Timber Towns Victoria President and Mayor of the Glenelg Shire, Cr Karen<br \/>\nStephens said \u201cUnfortunately, the industry has long been misunderstood by the<br \/>\nState Government and the broader community and has ultimately been brought to its<br \/>\nknees.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe loss of active forest management practices will ultimately mean the loss of<br \/>\ngenerational knowledge, loss of carbon capture in regrowth forest areas after<br \/>\nharvesting, and the loss of the flow on benefits to communities and the environment\u201d<br \/>\nCr Stephens said.<\/p>\n<p>Victoria&#8217;s forest industries are recognised as significant contributors to the economy<br \/>\nand community. An economic impact report commissioned by the Wellington and<br \/>\nEast Gippsland Shires in 2021 estimated that the ban on native timber harvesting<br \/>\nwould result in approximately 1,110 job losses and output to drop by $308 million.<\/p>\n<p>Forestry Australia (the professional body of forest scientists, farm foresters and<br \/>\nforestry professionals) advocates to support well managed sustainable forest<br \/>\nharvesting as a part of ecologically sustainable forest management practices. These<br \/>\nsustainably regenerative managed forests operate under the strict Australian<br \/>\nStandards and stringent auditing. Under ecologically sustainable forest<br \/>\nmanagement, active management practices are required to maintain resilient and<br \/>\nhealthy forests that can withstand the impacts of threats including bushfires, invasive<br \/>\nspecies and climate change.<\/p>\n<p>Forestry Australia recommends continued silvicultural techniques in our native<br \/>\nforests can be utilised to support forest health and biodiversity, mitigate risks from<br \/>\nfire, pests and diseases and to grow bigger trees quicker, storing more carbon and<br \/>\ncreating forests that are more resilient.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn contrast to the ban on native timber harvesting, there are a multitude of benefits<br \/>\nfrom the sustainable management of our forests and as the peak local government<br \/>\nbody for Victoria on forest policy, we wish to discuss these with the State<br \/>\nGovernment and work towards a positive solution for Victoria and our communities.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe call on the government to advise Timber Towns Victoria and the community,<br \/>\nwhat strategies do you have in place for the future sustainable management of forest<br \/>\nhealth, bushfire risks, conservation of biodiversity, and maximising carbon<br \/>\noutcomes.\u201d Cr Stephens said.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Timber Towns Victoria Timber Towns Victoria acknowledges a deep sadness and regret for the native timber harvesting communities and their families for the loss of regenerative native mixed species forest harvesting from actively managed forests in Victoria.
